Ilona Maher Praised as the Ultimate ‘Girl’s Girl’ for Helping Salon Staff with Safety Concern
Ilona Maher, described as a “presence of safety for other women,” had her appointment extended when a man entered the nail salon where she was getting her nails done. The American rugby player took to her Instagram page on Sunday (October 27) to remember how she made a female-owned business safer.
The 28-year-old athlete, who shared a reel on Instagram, said: “I went and got a pedicure, and I went there like an hour [or] an hour and a half before they closed, so I was one of the last customers to be inside of that place.
Ilona added: “I was in there and employees were walking out [and all] customers have exited. Only two of us are girls and I was there alone.
The Olympian then added that while she was receiving her treatment, a man came into the salon requesting a pedicure, too.

She continued: “So they put him in his chair and our toes are both being done but mine is ready first, I got regular polish this week so it needs to dry.
The workers of the salon applied some sandals on Ilona while her nails was drying but told her to stay for a little bit more.
While the workers were still attending to the man, the staff at the salon told Ilona they had not yet been ready for surgery to leave and back closer to home.
Ilona continued: ‘I sit there for no lie, like another half hour 25 minutes from when it was all completed.
And then they were done with him, and he got out. Then they come on and that is the last step — they say, ‘OK, we’ll close you out now. ”

When the rugby star was about to leave, the staff told her off for making her late before explaining why.
Ilona said: “And then they said, ‘Sorry for keeping you this long. All we wanted was for you to be there with us while he was there.
I did kind of get then why they did that.'” You know what this world is like.
After chatting with staff members about the ordeal and leaving that day, the Vermont, USA native found herself confronted by the man in question.

As I was walking out, this dude looks me in the eye and goes ‘Can I go home with you,’Ilona explained.
So I go, ‘No,’ and he goes, ‘Why not? I just keep walking. “It’s insane out there.”
Ilona continued by saying she would be more than happy to stay with anyone who felt uncomfortable or threatened after this experience,
She said: “I want you to keep me as long as you like. You can hold on to me for one more hour.
If you want me there simply to be a presence or for safety, I can cancel what I’m going.”

She jokingly ended: “I treated myself to mozzarella sticks since I did my vigilante thing tonight. Just putting my oven on and having a glass of wine.
“Be safe out here ladies, travel in pairs. Do your thing.”
In the caption of her video, Ilona wrote: “Ladies be smart and safe out there.”
The video also sparked a barrage of mixed responses, with one Instagram user, saying, “This is the unspoken life of women. Thank you for your courage to share this and be a light.

One user wrote, “Can you tell men that if ILONA MAHER — an almost 6′ giant muscle beast trained for takedown professionally has to be on guard then the rest of us have every right to feel ill at ease around them?”
A netizen shared, ‘I have a 15-year-old daughter who is not petite. “I share everything you share with her.
“We all need each other. We are all just walking each other home, just feel safer knowing there are women like them not afraid to ask for help, and women like you not afraid to be there for others.
Another wrote: “Love seeing all the women support in comments, but I’d love even more if we as a collective would do more to ensure we’re raising boys not needing protection from.
We are men — call out your sexist friends. Fathers, show your boys how to respect women. We are sick and tired of doing all the work ourselves, anyway!
One viewer wrote: “So sorry you fell victim to this but so glad you’re in a safe space for other women. I wish our world was safer.”
Another commenter noted it this way: “That they see you as strong and safe overselling the gendered compliments.”
Another viewer said: ‘Mere enemy hates seeing Ilona Mahers stiff arm coming.
And another wrote: “You are a girl’s girl for sure.”
Ilona is not the only one to speak openly about the disturbing realities women confront regarding safety, among other issues.

Saoirse Ronan just left her male co-stars speechless with a powerful message about violence against women earlier this week.
Saoirse Ronan had an interview on The Graham Norton Show on October 25 where trained with Paul Mescal, Eddie Redmayne and Denzel Washington.
Eddie was at one stage attached to star in the thriller mini-series The Days of the Jackal, in which he would have played a professional assassin.

What kind of person is going to sit there and think about that? If someone came up to me or attacked me, I am not going to be like phone,’ Paul mimicked as if pulling a phone out of his pocket.
Saoirse attempted to add something, but the rest of her co-stars kept on with the jokes until host Graham pretended like he was checking his phone in his pocket.
Paul said, “Sorry Mom, one second — bang.
Eddie replied, ‘That is a very fair point.
As the workers were still tending to the man, the nail salon staff told Ilona that they were not ready to send her out yet

The audience laughed and the Lady Bird star said: “And here is this, I guess that’s what girls think about all the time.”
After the pause, Saoirse said to the audience: “I’m right there, ladies? That prompted applause for her comments.
Threads user Isla Montague wrote: ‘Not enough people are talking about how it clearly took Saoirse Ronan a beat or two to even find space to get in a word since women also aren’t fucking used to just taking up space in discussions, as-Baccarat68 tried so hard doing the pushing.
“Right as everyone finally got quiet she followed with THE point that was HUGE.”
“You were so kind to stay,” a reader commented
